High time for the authorities act before anything goes wrong in the peaceful islands

Port Blair, Dec. 29: On 16th Dec. 2009 a Police party of P.S Pahargaon intercepted a Tata 407 Truck bearing Regn. No. AN01 A 1113 at Pathragudda No. 4, which was carrying explosives on its way to Brookshabad. The truck was being driven by one Murugeshan a resident of Old Bimblitan.

On checking, the police recovered 8 gunny bags containing explosives to which the truck driver failed to produce any license/permit. The driver alongwith the truck was apprehended on the spot and the explosives seized.

It is learnt that during the interrogation, the accused revealed that the seized truck was hired by one Pandi R/o Sippighat and one Anop Charan.

There have been many concerns about illegal explosives being transported into the islands especially by the residents of Prothrapur and Brichgunj who have been victims of stone mining. The residents were of the opinion that the quarry owners blast much more than the permitted amount of explosives but no proper check is being conducted.

The recent arrest is just the tip of an iceberg. If stern action and check is not initiated by the concerned authorities, it can also lead to security threat for the islands.
