Andaman Terrified By Recovery of Ammunitions Two Days Before Republic Day PDF Print E-mail

Box containing 5.56 mm Bullets recovered floating in the sea 
 
Port Blair, Jan 25: On 23rd January 2010, an ammunition box containing 323 cartridges of 5.56 mm caliber was retrieved while floating in the sea near the Fisheies jetty, Phoenix Bay. The box was noticed by a private labor engaged in jetty construction works being carried out by the Andaman Harbour Works. 
 
It is learnt that the labour on finding the box filled with ammunitions immediately informed a Home Guard lady on duty at the jetty. The police was immediately called and the box was taken into custody. 
 
This is the first ever incident in the islands wherein fresh ammunitions have been recovered from inside Port Blair city where hundreds of tourists avail boats for various tourist destinations in the islands. The recovery of ammunitions has shocked the islanders and a sense of insecurity prevails among the islanders.  
 
People even commented, “This is what was found. Who knows how many would have entered the islands by now”. 
 
There were many occasions when live bombs and ammunitions were recovered in various parts of the islands. But those were of World War II when the Japanese had occupied the islands. 
 
The A&N Police has registered a case vide Crime No. 113/10, u/s 25 of The Arms Act, 1959 in PS Aberdeen. The sources of the seized ammunitions is being verified by the Police and other investigating agencies like Intelligence Bureau and Andaman Nicobar Command.
