Port Blair, March 8: The first batch of 200 Freedom Fighters arrived at Chatham Island on 10th March 1858 aboard the steam frigate SS Semiramis marking the beginning of the penal settlement in Andamans. A memorial stands today at Chatham Island in memory of these pioneer Freedom Fighters of First War of Independence.
The Hon’ble Lt Governor, A&N Islands, will pay tributes to these pioneer Freedom Fighters at the Chatham Memorial on 10th March, 2010 at 11.30 A.M followed by other dignitaries.
