Port Blair, Aug. 8: Shri Manoranjan Bhakta, Ex- Member of Parliament A&N Islands has been declared as the President of Trinamool Congress, A&N Islands.

At a well organized function on 6th of August 2010 at 3.00 pm at Atul Smriti Samity (Bengali Club), the eight times Member of Parliament of A&N Constituency accepted the ‘flag’ of Trinamool Congress along with his appointment letter as the state president from the General Secretary, TMC West Bengal Dr. Biswapati Biswas. Hundreds of supporters of Trinamool Congress, who had left the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress, were present to witness the historic occasion.

In the function the names of the two working presidents were also declared. Accordingly Shri Bishwajit Lahiri and Shri Hemraj Bahadur will be the two working presidents who would assist Shri Manoranjan Bhakta, President TMC in his work to contest candidates for the forthcoming Municipal and Panchayat elections in the islands. Smti. Rupa Ray, W/o Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament, A&N Islands has been entrusted the task to organize the women’s wing of the party.

In his address on the newly appointed President said, “Kumari Mamta Bannerjee still has the portraits of Shri Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi at her residence. This shows her love and respect to the great leaders of Congress party. It is only when she realized that there were elements inside the Indian National Congress who disrespected the leaders; she decided to form a new party called Trinamool Congress. And Similar is my case”.

“When a party cannot respect its workers, there is no option but to leave”, Bhakta said.
“For me I never believed in caste, religion, feelings etc. This ideology was imbibed from the old people of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, who taught me to walk with all. This is the principle that I always followed and if you follow this, we can never lose”.

The newly elected president further said that after working for almost a life time for the Congress party, I was pained at to see the wrong developments in the party. “In a political party there may be some differences but if the leaders themselves are wrong, there remains no option but to leave”.

“There are hundreds of people who have gathered here on this occasion. They all belong to different parties but have decided to join the Trinamool because we need respect first. I wish to state that Mamta is an institution today. When she did not get to work in the Congress she went to the people to work for them”.

“It is a different time for us now. When I was the Member of Parliament, I was not able to help my people because of the One Man Rule of Lt. Governor in the islands. After amendment in the constitution, we were granted Panchayati Raj but today he is even trying to abolish the democratic institution we have”.

“It has become an administrative rule today in the islands. In APWD there are 2000 vacancies but it has been closed down by the bureaucrats. In such a situation when the development of the islands is being stopped, how can one expect to resolve the unemployment issue? We should therefore learn from Mamta how to fight back for the people”.

Shri Bhakta further said, “I was not keeping well yet I could not deny Kumari Mamta’s call to lead the party. I hope that with her help I will be able to serve the people better, which I could not do earlier. We have to stand united today for this noble cause. I have not left you. I am with you always. Whenever you need me, I am there and I promise to take you all together”.

Among the others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. Biswapati Biswas, Shri Hemraj Bahadur, Shri Biswait Lahiri, Shri Rebati Biswas and Smti Rupa Ray.
