Port Blair, Aug. 9: Asha Self Help Group Union of South Point promoted by UNNATI organized an awareness programme on objective of World Breast Feeding Week at South Point on 07.08.2010. Shri. Wajid Ali Shah was the Chief Guest and Smti. Maliga, Senior Citizen was special Guest of Honour.
 
Smti. Albakka, President Asha Self Help Group Union welcomed the participants and stressed the need for playing active role in practicing breast feeding considering the benefits of breast feeding. She further said that women organization like Self Help Groups and Mahila Mondals need to discuss issues like breast feeding in their monthly meeting involving health and nutrition providers for counseling women infant feeding. 
 
Dr. Wajid Ali Shah explained in details about the benefits and importance of breast feeding for their child development and life long health. He also said that colostrums, the yellowish, sticky beast milk produced at the end of pregnancy should be initiated within first hour after birth. He appreciated the efforts of Self Help Group union and UNNATI and further said such initiative by women organizations will help to practice breast feeding increasingly.
 
He also explained about policy of Govt. of India to mother after delivery, breast feeding give immunity strength to child/infant, Post delivery immunity, proper maintenance of hygiene during breast feeding. During interaction he also clarified various points raised by the participants.
 
Shri. C. Mohammed, President, UNNATI said Administration may consider to grant small funds to women organization to organize breast feeding awareness programme on regular basis at Panchayat and ward level. He further suggested that Administration may also identify a few active Self Help Groups at Panchayat and Municipal ward Level to foster establishment of breast feeding support group to which mothers can be referred. Initiating breast feeding within ½ hours can bring down infant mortality 20 percent. Considering the importance of World Breast Feeding Week is being observed.
