Port Blair, Aug. 9: The Ranchi community settled in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are demanding for a tribal status in the islands similar to that given to other aboriginal tribes. The Ranchi community as they are known in the islands belong to Chotanagpur area and have been settled here for years together. They had come down as forest workers, APWD workers mostly during the time Andamans were being converted into a settlement area.
There were many occasions when the Member of Parliaments and political parties have raised the issue to provide tribal status to this community living in the islands. But all efforts were turned down by the government and the ministry of tribal affairs. Recently the Member of Parliament Shri Bishnu Pada Ray to had raised the voice of this community in the Parliament but there was no positive results.
Frustrated with the response of the government, the ‘Ranchi Association’ today organized a massive rally at Port Blair city where thousands of them including men, women and children marched in heavy rains to submit a memorandum to the Lt. Governor. The rally was supported by the Member of Parliament Shri Bishnu Pada Ray and the supporters of the newly formed Trinamool Congress party.
