Port Blair, Aug 22: The Forest Officials have recently recovered 0.776 cum of illegally adopted hand sawn padauk timber from the reserve forest area (Bada Japan). The team from Jirkatang Forest Range comprising Forester Shri KL Dutta, Forest Guards S/Shri Uttam Kumar Mistry & Esaw and other workers, seized this hand sawn padauk timber stacked near a machan made for illegal hand sawing of timber. The team searched for the offenders in the nearby forests, who fled from the site of offence taking advantage of the dense forests and team destroyed the machan and brought the timber to Range head quarter. A forest offence case has been registered and the investigation to detect the offenders is on. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Shri. Khan Mohammed, Range Officer, Jirkatang.
Meanwhile, in another instance, during a combing operation jointly done by Forest & Police personnel of Tusnabad Forest Range & Tirur Police Out Post, in the Tirur Reserve Forest area & its adjoining forests on Aug 13, the team traced out 49 animal traps laid by unknown miscreants in the forests and also found carcasses of two male spotted deer in the traps. The detected animal traps have been seized under the provision of the WL (P) Act, 1972 and brought to the Range (HQ) for safe custody. A case against unknown offenders has been registered and is under investigation. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Shri KP Aboobacker, Range Officer, Tusnabad.
Trespasses into Reserve Forests and Tribal Reserves, sawing & cutting of timber and hunting of wild animals including laying traps are serious offences under Indian Forest Act, 1927, Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and the PAT Regulations, 1956 of A&N Islands. In this regard, the DFO, South Andaman has requested the general public to inform over telephone numbers 200638, 201136, 224540 about such illegal activities.
