Port Blair, Sept 2: Raising the issue of welfare of the primitive tribes inhabiting these islands in the Lok Sabha last Monday, the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu pada Ray said alongwith Jarawas, tribes like Onges, Andamanese, Shompens and Sentinals need protection in view of their reduced population. The MP also highlighted the need for granting SC/ST status to those who came down here from various States like Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab and erstwhile East Pakistan (Bangladesh) and settled in these islands. He said, those who belonged to SC/ ST category in their respective place of origin, may be extended the same status in these islands too.
