The girl child has to be given highest priority to ensure population stablisation with gender equity and to sustain socio economic development. It is with this in mind that the Government of India has felt it necessary to organise the National Girl Child Day, so as to raise the overall status of the girl child.

It is heartening to note that the Child Sex Ratio at 966 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is far better when compared to other States and Union Territories. However, we need to put in more efforts to make girl children equal citizens both in the public and private domain. The National Girl Child Day thus serves as a reminder of how much we have achieved and how much more still needs to be done.

I am happy to learn that the Department of Social Welfare and other agencies are organising the National Girl Child Day. I wish the endeavour all success.

Lt. Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh

Lieutenant Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands
