Port Blair, Jan. 24: National Girl Child Day was celebrated in the islands together with the rest of the country. As such a function was held in the TGCE auditorium here today. The First Lady of the islands, Smt. Bhawanee Singh inaugurated the function as the chief guest.

The chief guest distributed gifts provided by SSWB to students present on the occasion and also interacted with them.

Speakers at the function emphasized the need for protection and development of girl children especially the adolescent girls, their care relating to health, nutrition and education as also the need to empower them to face challenges like domestic violence, child marriage, dowry and many other social evils. The speakers included Advocate Rakesh Pal Govind, Dr. Kusum, Gynaecologist and Dr. S K Jagpal Singh, Principal Khalsa Public School.
