Member Planning Commission underlines the need to hand over permanent shelters at the earliest 
 
Port Blair, March 4: Dr. (Smt) Syeda Hameed, Member, Planning Commission arrived here today on a on a 3-day visit to review the progress of Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme. Dr. Hameed soon after her arrival held a meeting with the officials of A&N Administration in the conference hall of the Secretariat to review the progress of the Rehabilitation Programme (TRP). The Chief Secretary, Shri Vivek Rae alongwith the senior officials were present on the occasion.
Dr. Syeda Hameed in her address said that she is here to review the progress of the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme and underlined the need for completing the work of permanent shelters and handing over the same to the beneficiaries at the earliest. The Member Planning Commission further stressed for expediting the projects coming under the other components of TRP.
 
The Chief Secretary Shri Rae later assured the Member Planning Commission that the construction of Permanent Houses will be completed in totality by December 2009. He said that the shelters will be handed over to the beneficiaries soon after completion. The CS also gave a detailed presentation on the sector wise work under the Tsunami Relief Programme, its status and also the details of funds, which is required for completing the project.
 
Later, Dr. (Smt) Syeda Hameed held meeting with PRI members and village leaders from Manarghat, Tirur and Colinpur villages regarding intrusion of Jarawas into the adjoining villages. The Up-Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, Shri Raja Ram alongwith other Pradhan highlighted the problems being faced by the villagers on this account. The Member Planning Commission gave a patient hearing to the problems of the villagers and urged the Administration to look into the issues. 
 
The itinerary of the Member Planning Commission for tomorrow includes a meeting with the Tribal Council leaders Nancowry followed by meeting with tribal captains of Katchal, visit to affected villages and permanent shelters site at Campbell Bay on March 6.
Before leaving on March 7, Dr. Syeda Hameed will visit Bambooflat permanent shelter site at 8.30 in the morning.
