Lt. Governor commissions Water Treatment Plant at Birdline

Port Blair, Feb. 2: The Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM commissioned the newly constructed Water Treatment Plant at a function held at the Plant’s premises at Birdline this morning. The Lt. Governor unveiled the plaque to mark the commissioning of the Plant on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the Lt. Governor said that the Administration’s main priority is to provide safe and potable drinking water to the people of the islands and all out efforts are been taken in this direction. He was addressing as the chief guest after inaugurating the Birdline Water Treatment Plant at a function held at Birdline this morning. People in rural areas always face safe drinking water problems and therefore such plants have been set up at different places to cater to their need, he said. This plant, having a clean capacity of 3.00 lakhs ltrs. per day will cover nearly 5,000 population of villages such as Birdline, Prothrapur, Calicut, Kamraj Nagar and Mahavir Nagar, he said.

The Lt. Governor said that to cater to the increasing water supply demand of Port Blair and its adjacent areas, height of Dhanikhari Dam is being increased and will be completed soon. Similar water treatment plants are being set up in different islands of Middle and North Andaman as well as Nicobar groups of islands. RO plants will also be set up wherever possible so that all islanders in those areas will also get potable drinking water, he said and advised authorities involved in maintenance of water treatments plants to ensure that every care be taken for proper functioning of the plants and to monitor the quality of water being supplied to the people.

Gandhi The Mahatma to Compete for Award

Port Blair, Feb. 2: Naresh Chander Lal’s film ‘Gandhi the Mahatma’ will be competing for ‘Gollapudi Srinivas National Award’ at Chennai. The award is for the best Debutant Director of a feature film in the country in memory of Late Srinivas, an aspiring Director who passed away in a freak accident during the shoot of his debut film in 1992.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs1,50,000/- and a memento. The award is announced on March 17th (Srinivas s Birthday)and given away at Chennai on 12th August (His death anniversary).
