Allegations against DSS for Sailing Unfit Passenger Vessel to Car Nicobar: DSS Refutes

Port Blair, Feb. 3: The Directorate of Shipping Services has advised the passengers to ignore and pay no attention to news published in a section of Press today, the 3rd February, 2012 in which it has been alleged that the Directorate of Shipping Services is sending unfit passenger vessel MV Dering to Car Nicobar.

In an explanation through the Information & Publicity Directorate, the department has stated that the Directorate of Shipping Services is well aware of its responsibility and will always provide its service with utmost sincerity and dedication for the benefit and interest of general public taking into account the safety of life and property.

The vessel MV Dering after undergoing comprehensive Renewal Survey including Class and all Statutory Certificates, resumed its service from 5th January 2012 and evidently, post Renewal Survey, all the vessels are pressed into service only after due clearance from the competent Statutory Authorities.

Problem of passengers during rough weather condition is almost inevitable and mostly persist in all kinds of vessels. The Directorate of Shipping Services is aware of the status and condition of the vessel MV Dering and accordingly the vessel is allowed to cross 10 degree channel only during fair weather conditions and sailing schedules are made considering all such aspects. On each occasion prior to sailing to Car Nicobar, the vessel MV Dering is thoroughly inspected by the Competent Statutory Authorities issuing B-Certificate and after satisfying in all respect, the vessel is allowed to sail. Moreover, even if any complaints regarding condition of the vessel is received, the Directorate of Shipping Services has promptly taken up the matter with Technical Management Company i.e. Shipping Corporation India towards rectifying the same.

Request for change of date for Common Recruitment Examination

Port Blair, Feb. 3: Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament has requested the Lt. Governor to change the date for ‘Common Recruitment Examination’ on account of Milad-Un-Nabi or Id-E-Milad (Birth day of Prophet Muhammed). The day has also been notified as public holiday in the A&N Administration’s Gazette.

The above request had initially come through Shri, A.P Ashif, President, Samasta Keral Sunniyuvajana Sangam, Wimberly Gunj on 19th Dec. 2011 but the Administration had rejected it.

The MP further explains that the entire Muslim Community of the Country observe the Milad-Ud-Nabi or Id-E-Milad (Birth day of Prophet Muhammed ), including A&N Islands. The day is celebrated with hoisting of flag, prayers and conduct of Rally in South Andaman area.

Bishnu Pada Ray therefore requested the LG to take up the matter with the appropriate authority urgently for postponement of the said Exam and fix up any other date to respect the sentiments of the minority community.
